Winter in the Lake District
Winter in the Lake District – why a winter break in the Lake District is a great idea.
You may ask- “Winter Breaks in the Lake District- why would I do that?”
There are lots of reasons to spend some time in winter in the Lake District. The Lake District has recently been awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status, recognising the unique beauty and culture of this area. That beauty if often at its best in winter. Here’s a photo I took last November. Brockstone Grasmere Cottage has views of Rydal Water. The building you can see in the photo is Nab Cottage. Brockstone is just out of view behind trees, on the footpath which runs above Nab Cottage.
Why do people visit the Lake District in winter?
Why do people visit the Lake District in winter? One of the main reasons is for the scenery and the walks. This remains as big a draw as ever in the winter. It’s true that the hours of daylight are shorter. If you want to do a really big walk, such as leaving from the door of Brockstone to do the Fairfield Horseshoe, you’ll need to start early. For most of our visitors, an invigorating walk of three or four hours is plenty. Maybe take in a pub lunch somewhere like The Brittania at Elterwater, a lovely old pub, or your could walk over to The Mortal Man at Troutbeck.
You could just do the beautiful Rydal Round from the front door of Brockstone Grasmere Cottage, taking in a visit to Rydal Hall gardens, and lunch in their excellent tea room.
At the end of the day, come home to a bubbly spa bath and a cosy log stove.Sounds good to me!

Here’s the lovely log fire to relax by on a winter evening.
Perched high on a Lakeland hillside with glorious views, Brockstone Cottage gets any sun that the Lake District has to offer in the winter months. Here’s a photo taken on a sunny January day. On a winter’s day, enjoy a relaxed breakfast, then put on your boots and start walking from the door, making the maximum use of the daylight hours. Return home to a warm cosy cottage, soak in the spa bath, then spend the evening by the log burning stove, reading, listening to music, watching a film, doing a jigsaw or just gently snoozing .
Restaurants, pubs, theatres, cinemas
You can go out of course! The restaurants, pubs, cinemas and theatres are quiet, and you’ll be made very welcome.
Here are a few photos I’ve taken of the area in winter. The views can be better than summer, as there are no pesky leaves on the trees …
Winter sun at Brockstone Grasmere Cottage
It is widely acknowledged that most of us in this Northern island don’t get enough sun in winter. We can’t guarantee sun in the Lakes in winter, but we can promise you that if you wrap up warm ( waterproofs may be needed too) and get outdoors in winter you will feel much better than if you stay huddled up indoors.
Winter breaks are good for you. It’s a fact. Winter breaks in the countryside refuel body and soul.
Live Theatre in the Lake District in Winter.

The Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal stages theatre, music, comedy, films, and exhibitions all year round.
The Old Laundry in Bowness also has an excellent winter theatre programme.
If you love films you’ll love the great choice at Zeffirellis and Fellinis Ambleside . There’s also live Jazz, live theatre links and ballet performances. You can combine a cinema ticket with a meal at either Zeffs or Fellinis – excellent value and highly recommended by our guests.
