Here is a photo I took from the “Grot” of the falls at Rydal Beck.

Rydal Falls from the Grot

The Grot, a summerhouse, was built in 1694 as a viewing station from where visitors could get a perfect view of nature. Turner painted this scene. There is more information from the architects who restored it here.

Fabulous Sunny Weather in the Lakes!

It’s dry! It’s sunny! (OK, it’s cold, but that’s not bad when you’re out walking)

This is just wonderful hiking weather- perfect for a stay at White Moss House, 4 Star Bed and Breakfast. Rydal Water, Grasmere, or in our self catering holiday cottage with amazing views.

Whilst you are here, you can do a wide range of walks from the door. You might like to read two articles I’ve written- on is a very detailed one about the circular walk round Rydal Water, from White Moss House.

The other has  6 beautiful circular walks from White Moss House described for you.

What’s the weather like? Well, we can’t deny that it’s very cold for this time of year, but on the plus side, it’s great for walking, it’s DRY and BRIGHT, and the views are AMAZING!  There are no leaves on the trees to block the views, and the hills all have snow on them, so for those of you who like to take photos, this is the time to visit.

Daffodils in the snow on Monday- it’s melted now, but the daffodils still look great.

Check back in the blog posts for some lovely pictures of the Rydal Hall Garden- well worth a visit this weekend.

Sunshine, snow , daffodils and special Lake District offers

The snow is still here, but so is the sun. It’s cold but lovely, though not the temperature we had last year when the daffodils were over in about a week, as the temps were around 20C.

Daffodils at our holiday cottage, Brockstone with views over Rydal Water

This year the early daffodils are in deep freeze, and it will be weeks before all the daffodils are out unless there is a sudden heatwave. I took the photo above yesterday, as we swept the steps at Brockstone Holiday Cottage, Grasmere clear of snow.

Rydal Water from Brockstone Cottage

Here’s another that I took, looking down over Rydal Water. The gate is on the “coffin route” between Rydal and Grasmere. You can find more details of this walk by clicking through this link for the walk round Rydal Water.

Here’s one visitor who made it through the snow

It’s been snowing all day- some guests have been unable to get to Grasmere and the Lake District.
However, we have one visitor who has arrived- but we’re not that delighted.

Deer in White Moss House herb garden.

I’ve just taken this photo- his/her friend’s back legs can be seen running off as they heard me. Deer may look pretty,( well , OK, they really do look cute)  but they can eat any green shoots in seconds.

We’re back in the swing again…and we have special offers

We’ve welcomed our first guests of 2013 to White Moss House. They are a charming couple from Germany. The gentleman has been before, with his grandson, who is half English, and did all the translating last time. I can speak reasonable French and Spanish , but my German is very limted so we’re having fun- sign language is being used….

The gentleman is a musician, and just loves having the baby grand piano at his disposal all the time. We love hearing him play.

They also love our Lakeland tea bread. That’s why they’ve come back- home made tea bread by the log fire, with the piano- he said “it’s a dream”!

We’re offering special rates until Easter, and our cottage is still available until Easter Saturday too. Please spread the word……email sue@whitemoss.com for your best rates. The daffodils are waiting for you.

Wonderful baking aromas coming from the kitchen.

I’ve just taken my Lakeland Teabread and my Fruit Flapjack out of the oven, and the kitchen smells wonderful.

White Moss Lakeland Tea bread- welcome to our guests on arrival

I’ve make a double batch, as I’m making the cakes for Grasmere WI meeting tomorrow, and also for our bed and breakfast guests, who will be arriving from Friday onwards as we open up for a new season. We like to give our guests a welcoming pot of tea with home made cakes in front of the log fire in the Wordsworth Lounge- with our compliments. It’s a great start to a lovely Lake District break.

We are offering special rates for the next two weeks, which you can see by clicking this link to our special offers page.

We also have our cottage with amazing views available for self catering from 15 to 29 March  ( leaving Saturday 30th) at very special reduced rates, whether for a week or a short break. Click here to see the cottage and find out more about the special offers

Back to the topic of Grasmere WI. We meet on the second Thursday of the month, and visitors to the Lakes who are WI members are very welcome to come to our meetings. I write and maintain the Grasmere WI website, which you can find by clicking here to take you to Grasmere WI website. Tomorrow we are having a chocolate making demo at the new chocolate shop in Grasmere, Cocoa Hearts. Should be good! I might be bringing some cakes back home if we get to taste some of the products, as we might feel that our waistlines can’t take too much more…….
