Culture in the English Lakes World Heritage Site.
The scenery is amazing. You probably know that. Did you also know that in addition to the natural beauty of the Lake District, there is a huge cultural legacy? This is one of the factors considered when the English Lake District was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
Here are some of the highlights you can visit on your stay at Brockstone Grasmere Cottage.
Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum Grasmere.
Just a 10 minute walk from Brockstone Grasmere Cottage is Dove Cottage, home of William Wordsworth. Dove Cottage is on the edge of Grasmere Village. Walk 10 minutes down the hill from Brockstone Grasmere Cottage along the paths Wordsworth loved, and you’ll be at Dove Cottage. A further 5 minutes takes you to the centre of Grasmere.
In the centre of Grasmere you will find the famous Heaton Cooper Studio. Here you can buy artists materials, paintings and prints.
A short walk from the Heaton Cooper Studio is the National Trust House Allan Bank.
Here is an excellent blog from Lake District gems all about the history of Allan Bank. It was home for a time to Canon Rawnsley, one of the founders of the Nation Trust, and William Wordsworth also lived there for a time.

In the centre of the Village of Grasmere Is the ancient St Oswald’s Church .
The church is usually open for visitors during the day. Be sure to walk round the back of the church to view the graves of William Wordsworth and his family.
A visit to Grasmere is not complete without popping in to the Grasmere Gingerbread shop. It’s right by the church, a tiny shop, usually with a huge queue outside as people but the famous Sarah Nelson Gingerbread for a souvenir of their visit to Grasmere .

Michelin Stars in the Lake District.
Cumbria has the most Michelin Starred Restaurants anywhere in the country outside of London. Here’s an article from the Westmorland Gazette listing all the amazing Michelin Star rated restaurant in Cumbria for 2024.

In Ambleside we have the wonderful Old Stamp House and the brilliant Lake Road Kitchen We love both of these great restaurants for special occasions. Brilliant food, lovely people.
Just along the road from Brockstone is Forest Side Grasmere
Forest Side is a hotel and restaurant, in its own grounds with a lovely lounge and bar and a very spacious restaurant. The food is amazing, the people are wonderful. We love the lunch there- great for a special treat on a day when you’re taking a break from walking!
In the other direction, just past Ambleside is The Samling Hotel and Restaurant which has stunning views and great food.
