SUMMER IN THE LAKE DISTRICT

People will tell you that summer in the Lake District is very busy, and that’s true. However, you only need to get away from the lovely honeypot towns and villages to find lots of space and countless things to do.

TRADITIONAL SPORTS AND SHOWS.

Summer in the Lakes is the time for traditional “Sports” and “Shows”. Nearly every town and village has a fixed day every year when the “Sportsfield” is taken over by tents, animals, athletes and all manner of traditional country events.

The last Thursday in July is the date for Ambleside Sports. The website for Ambleside Sports can be found here.

 

The second weekend in August is Lowther Show.

JULY IS RUSHBEARING TIME.

A few villages celebrate the ancient tradition of Rushbearing. Rushbearing in Ambleside is the first Saturday in July, and in Grasmere it’s the second Saturday in July. Read more about Rushbearing here.

AUTUMN IN THE LAKE DISTRICT

Autumn might just be my favourite time in the Lake District. It’s really hard to pcik a favourite time because the Lake District is wonderful all year round, but here’s a link to a page and some wonderful photos about Autumn at Brockstone Grasmere Cottage in the Lake District.

THINGS TO DO IN THE LAKE DISTRICT

Some years ago I wrote a series of articles for Hubpages about the Lake District, and you might find some helpful information there.

WILDFLOWERS AND GARDENS IN THE LAKE DISTRICT

There are beautiful wildflowers and local gardens to be seen around Brockstone Grasmere Cottage and throughout the Lake District. These can be viewed at any time of year, and even in winter there are charming gardens and plants to be see, It has to be said though, that my favourite times of the year for gardens is the spring.
